Moto in the Mud

I went along to a motocross race today to meet up with a couple of friends that were racing locally so the D300 and a long lens came along to see if we could get anything decent.

It didn't stop raining for pretty much the entire time I was there, so the camera seals got a working over almost as much as the bikes themselves did (well, maybe not quite that much). Moto is different to shooting downhill MTB in that the riders are coming at you a lot faster as they're all on track at once, as opposed to one at a time in a time trial format. This makes for pretty full on shooting. I'll normally figure out my spot where I'm going to take the picture, pick a focus point on the track where I want the rider to be in the frame and then click the button as the rider rides into position. Seeing as moto is more chaotic, I figured I'd let the camera do a little extra work and tried using the continuous servo auto focus. It didn't do a bad job, but it's kinda weird doing it a different way than you're used to and I felt that I wasn't composing my shots how I would normally, so definitely need to have another go at shooting the 'crossers.
